Yasser Arafat was a Palestinian leader and chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), president of the Palestinian National Authority, and leader of the Fatah, which he founded in 1959.
Arafat spent much of his life fighting against Israel in the name of Palestinian self-determination. Originally opposed to Israel’s existence, he engaged in peace negotiations with the state of Israel in the early 90s (mainly the Oslo Accords 1993).
Although he has said to have accepted Israel’s right to exist, his actions show the contradictory and he most likely never changed his strategy, which was to destroy Israel and continue the terrorist attacks against civilians.
