Zionist Organization of America press release, June 7, 1999
The Palestinian Authority has appointed more Hamas
fugitives to leading positions in the police force, according to General
Security Services chief Ami Ayalon.
Middle East Newsline reports that Ayalon told the Israeli Cabinet
on June 6, 1999, that
“many fugitives had been given posts in the PA police and
security forces, and that “some of these posts include senior commands.”
Referring to the 45 fugitive terrorists whom Israel has asked the PA to hand
over for prosecution, Ayalon said that some had been detained by the PA police, but
“They have been allowed to leave for extended furloughs
and were only returned to jail after Israeli protests.”
Similarly, Israeli Justice Minister Tzahi Hanegbi revealed on
January 22, 1997 that
“many of the terrorists wanted by Israel are serving
in senior positions in the Palestinian Authority, including the police
force, and the positions assigned to the perpetrators and organizers of a
given terrorist crime are in direct proportion to the amount of victims
killed in the attack.”
Morton A. Klein, National President of the Zionist Organization of
America (ZOA) urged the Clinton administration to demand that Arafat
“stop rewarding murderers of Jews with positions in the Palestinian Authority
police force. This indicates that Arafat has still not changed from the
pre-September 1993 Arafat who openly supported the murder of Jews.”
The Oslo accords [Cairo Agreement, May 1994, Annex I, Article 3,
par.4-b) require Arafat to submit lists of potential police officers to
Israel for approval before hiring them. Arafat has repeatedly ignored this requirement.
